My husband, Roberto Quijada, accompanied me to the field in 2004-05 and 2012 as fieldwork photographer. Working together made it possible for him to document rituals photographically, while I talked to people participating in the rituals. We were also able to use the photographs in interviews. One such interview, with Bair Zhambalovich Tsyrendorzhiev, formed the basis of the Bukhe Baatar film on this website. We were also able to give copies of the photographs to the shamans at Tengeri as a way to express our appreciation. They used Roberto’s photographs in a local exhibition at the City Museum of Ulan-Ude, and in an album commemorating 10 years of rituals on Olkhon Island. This website includes both fieldwork photographs from Buryatia, as well as his art photography:
